A thermostat is a component that senses the temperature of a system and maintains the system’s temperature near a desired setpoint. Also, it is for use in any device or system that cools or heats to a setpoint temperature. Examples include central heating, building heating, air conditioners, HVAC systems, water heaters, kitchen equipment including ovens and refrigerators, and medical and scientific incubators. It also operates as a “closed-loop” control device, as it seeks to reduce the error between the measured and desired temperatures.
