How to Measure for Pile Caps
Properly measuring your wooden pilings ensures you get the right cap the first time. Even if all pilings were installed together, individual sizes can vary by 2–3 inches.
✅ Most Accurate Method: Use a String

Wrap a string tightly around the full circumference of the piling

Measure the length of the string in inches
-
Divide that number by π (3.1416) to calculate the diameter

Round up to the nearest half inch to select your cap size
Example:
25″ string ÷ 3.1416 = 7.96 → Order an 8″ piling cap

🔎 Less Accurate Method (If No String)
If string isn’t available, use a tape measure to take two measurements:

Measure across the piling North/South

Measure again East/West
-
Average the two and round up to the nearest half inch
Example: If a piling measures 8.3″ x 8.1″, order an 8.5″ cap
