EMP 26-00172 Seal

An oil seal is for 1980-83 mercury mariner, 2-cyl 40 hp, 3-cyl 70 hp outboards. These oil seal functions close the space between stationary and moving components in mechanical equipment to prevent lubricant escape and retain grease in a case or housing. It helps prevent entering harmful contaminants into the machinery and protects shafts and bearings from ingress of dirt and foreign matter and egress of oil or grease. Insufficient lubrication and running the engine consistently with a low oil level can make the seal too hot or dry it out so that it warps and starts leaking.
